About the Country Soul Songbook Summit
In November of 2019, Kamara Thomas invited the powerhouse crew of Rissi Palmer, Kym Register, Shana Tucker, and Phil Cook together for the first Country Soul Songbook event at North Star Church of the Arts in Durham.
The goal of the event was to gather community to celebrate black, brown and queer voices and bodies in Country-Soul-Americana music.
The 2nd installment of CSSB was scheduled on March 15th, 2020, the eve of NC’s pandemic lockdown. As producer Heather Cook made the swift switch to go virtual, the project got dragged into the future with just about everything else in 2020.
CSSB’s bigger vision now seemed closer that previously expected: an online platform featuring concerts, intimate performances, interviews, conversations, and cultural offerings rooted in CSSB’s mission to advocate for and circle community around historically marginalized voices in Country and Americana, and to gather an archive that celebrates the past-present-future voices of this progressive community.
The Country Soul Songbook Summit naturally ensued as the first virtual gathering.
